The fourth episode of Dragon Ball Daima, broadcast in Japan on November 1, 2024, is pure road trip. With no ship, Goku, the Supreme Kai and Glorio cross the Third Demon World on foot, learn how that world's Dragon Balls work and run into Gomah's military police, the Gendarmerie, for the first time.

Summary

Long flights are too tiring in the Third World's heavy air, so the trio continues on foot. Over a Sea of Darkness, a fire-spitting winged beast attacks: Glorio drops it with a kick, and Goku admits the demon might even be stronger than the Supreme Kai. Soon after, a giant demon sets up an ambush with a club, but Goku has already sensed him and knocks him out. Glorio has never heard of ki, the energy that lets Goku feel his opponents coming.

The group stops at a roadside shop run by a couple. Goku devours a skewered lizard and takes an interest in a set of bugs with odd powers: some restore stamina like a senzu bean, one can even fuse two people together. Glorio, looking for transport, settles for a Sky Seed, a sort of plant rocket that fires them about 120 kilometers in the right direction. The ride is uncontrollable, and the three have to jump off at the last second.

On the road, Glorio explains that the Demon Realm's Dragon Balls are not hidden: there is one per world, everyone knows where it is, and each is guarded by a Tamagami. To claim it you have to beat the guardian, and nobody ever has. Goku immediately sees a challenge; the Supreme Kai reminds him that the goal is to save Dende, but with three Dragon Balls they could wish to be adults again, and Glorio agrees.

In a nearby town, the Gendarmerie demand ever-higher offerings of gold from the residents and threaten to take years off the lives of anyone who comes up short. A masked figure intervenes with a wasabi bomb that does not have the hoped-for effect; when the officers grab the stranger, Goku steps in with his Power Pole and takes many of them down. The three flee to the edge of town, where the masked stranger catches up with them and takes off the mask.

Our take

This is the episode closest in spirit to the original series: a journey in stages, monsters along the way, an eccentric shop and an absurd mode of transport. The Sky Seed is a pure Toriyama invention, and the bug shop sets up items that will matter much later.

The explanation of the Tamagami also matters, because it finally gives the series a quest structure: three worlds, three Dragon Balls, three guardians. Goku gets back the look of the boy who went looking for strong opponents, and the Supreme Kai plays the worried older brother. The clash with the Gendarmerie shows the everyday face of Gomah's regime, made of taxes and fear.
