Episode 193 of Dragon Ball Z, first broadcast in Japan on July 14, 1993 and titled One More Wish in Funimation's dub, is an episode of farewells. Krillin spends the last wish on Android 18, the fighters go their separate ways, Chi-Chi learns that Goku is not coming back and Trunks leaves for his future. Then time passes, and Gohan learns to live in a world at peace.

Summary

Shenron is waiting for the second wish, and nobody has an idea. Yamcha floats an expensive necklace for his girlfriend, then insists he was joking. Krillin asks for Android 17 and Android 18 to be turned back into humans, but the dragon replies that their power exceeds his own. So he settles for something else: removing the bombs hidden inside their bodies. Shenron grants it and vanishes, and the Dragon Balls scatter again.

His friends are puzzled, and Krillin explains that he feels sorry for the pair, and that he freed 17 as well because he thinks he is the right partner for 18. At that point she steps out of hiding to set him straight: 17 is her twin brother. She repeats that she owes him nothing, but before leaving she tells him "see you later," which is all Krillin needs to keep hoping.

The group breaks up. Tien announces he is leaving and they may never see him again; Piccolo will stay at the Lookout with Dende. On the way back, Yamcha tells Trunks how Vegeta flew into a rage after his death, and the young man realizes his father cared about him. At the Son house, Gohan breaks the news to Chi-Chi: she collapses, then wipes away her tears.

The next day at Capsule Corporation, everyone sees Trunks off as he leaves in the time machine. Even Vegeta is there, sending him off with a two-finger salute. A month later, Gohan takes his grandfather to the lake where he used to fish with his father and hauls in an enormous fish, while baby Trunks takes his first steps on his own. Television airs a special on Mr. Satan, who smashes nineteen roof tiles out of twenty, and in the afterlife King Kai tells Goku they will build a new house together.

Our take

Krillin's wish is the tenderest scene of the saga, and it has huge consequences. In a story where the Dragon Balls almost always fix deaths and disasters, Krillin uses one for a selfless gesture toward a girl who was an enemy until recently, and who turns him down. Android 18's "see you later" is tiny, but it is the start of the couple we will meet again in the Majin Buu saga, married and with a daughter.

The other half of the episode is one long breath. The Japanese title, "New days... Father! I'll do my best," is Gohan's promise, and the anime's additions (the fishing trip with the Ox-King, baby Trunks's first steps, Mr. Satan's TV show, Goku and King Kai planning their house) exist to show a normal life regained. In the manga, after Trunks leaves, the main cast is not seen again until the seven-year time skip.

Trivia

  • It adapts chapter 418. Written by Takao Koyama and directed by Masahiro Hosoda, with Yukio Ebisawa as animation director, it drew a 19.7% share.
  • In the English dubs, Yamcha suggests wishing for money; in the original he wants a necklace for a girlfriend who may not even exist.
  • It is the last episode in which Gohan is an only child and Bulma has shoulder-length hair, and the last with Stephanie Nadolny as Gohan's regular voice in the Funimation dub.
  • In the manga Gohan comes home to find only his mother; in the anime the Ox-King and Fortuneteller Baba are there too.
