Episode 63 of Dragon Ball Super, first broadcast in Japan on October 23, 2016 and titled Don't You Disgrace Saiyan Cells! Vegeta's Fierce Battle Commences! in Funimation's dub, belongs to Vegeta. The title is his charge against Goku Black: a thief using a body he never earned. Before that, though, there is an exhausted Trunks and a return trip that starts in the worst possible way.

Summary

In the present, Bulma refuels the time machine, Vegeta finishes his training in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber, and Goku thanks Master Roshi and leaves with the jar for the Evil Containment Wave. In the future, Trunks wakes up at the hideout to learn that Mai has found the villains' lair and gone to attack it alone. She fires a powerful energy round built by Future Bulma at Black, but it is not enough, and Black is on top of her when Trunks arrives to save her.

Trunks returns to his blue-and-gold-aura form and takes on both enemies by himself. His plan is to hit Zamasu first and, while he regenerates, blast Black with everything he has: it works, and a Galick Gun hits Black square on. Then Trunks grabs Zamasu, meaning to blow him apart with his last strength, convinced even an immortal must have a limit. Before he can do it, Black's energy blade runs him through from behind.

At that moment the machine carrying Goku, Vegeta and Bulma lands in West City. Black and Zamasu come to them, and Zamasu blows up the machine: this future will be their grave. Vegeta replies that they even brought a coffin for the pair, a little cramped. Only the Evil Containment Wave jar was still on board. Never mind: they will settle this with their fists.

Gowasu and Shin arrive too, thanks to the Time Rings. Gowasu begs his former pupil to repent, only to learn that the Super Dragon Balls have already been destroyed. Goku asks whether at least Whis is alive in this future, and Shin explains that an angel "ceases to function" when their God of Destruction dies, until a new one appears; Goku is surprised Whis is an angel at all, since he has no wings. Bulma pulls an entire garage out of a capsule to repair the machine and gives the recovered Trunks the job of gluing the broken jar back together. Meanwhile, Vegeta, stronger after his training, dominates Black: only Goku can truly use that body, he says, and Black is a fake facing the real Saiyan prince.

Our take

Vegeta has often been cast as the one who loses to make the enemy look strong, and this saga was no exception. Here the series hands him the spotlight with a speech that is entirely his: Saiyan pride is not about power but about the effort it takes to earn it. Black, who stole another man's strength, is the exact opposite of everything Vegeta stands for.

The detail about angels is a nice touch, widening Super's mythology without weighing it down, as is Mai and Trunks' tenacity in the first half. Trunks' suicide plan says a lot about him: he is willing to die to end this.

Trivia

  • Written by Toshio Yoshitaka and directed by Kazuya Karasawa; it drew a 5.7% rating.
  • According to Kanzenshuu, it was the first Dragon Ball episode simulcast with English and Spanish subtitles.
  • Goku jokes that Whis does not look like an angel: no wings, and his backside is not hanging out.
  • The jar Bulma asks Trunks to repair is the one Goku carried from Kame House, shattered when Zamasu destroys the machine.

Did you know? The round Mai fires at Black is a weapon designed by Future Bulma before her death: even in her final days, the scientist was still working for the resistance.
