Episode 100 of Dragon Ball Super, first broadcast in Japan on July 23, 2017 and titled Rampage! A Crazed Warrior's Savagery Awakens! in Funimation's dub, marks the milestone with Universe 6's Saiyan women. Caulifla challenges Goku and, with his help, reaches Super Saiyan 2; Kale, feeling left out, transforms again and tramples everything in sight. Stopping her takes a single blast from Jiren.

Summary

With Krillin gone, Universe 7 is down to nine. Vegeta is still struggling against Botamo and Magetta when Cabba arrives, eliminates Universe 10's Murisam and Universe 3's Nigrissi, and transforms to challenge his "master". Elsewhere, Hit uses Time-Skip to knock Narirama out before he can fire his cannon, while Kale is used as a punching bag by Napapa and Methiop. Caulifla rescues her, beats Methiop as a Super Saiyan and flips Napapa off the arena.

Then Caulifla targets Goku, who is busy with Universe 2's Yardratian Jimizu, and kicks the Yardratian aside. She wants to learn Super Saiyan Blue, but Goku doubts she is ready. Kale cannot transform, so Caulifla takes on a hyper-muscular Super Saiyan form, which, Goku explains, trades speed for power. The Saiyan shows her Super Saiyan 2, Caulifla copies it at the first try, and an excited Goku thinks she might even reach Super Saiyan 3.

Kale tries to help her friend with an energy blast, but Goku deflects it and tells her not to interfere. When Caulifla looks away, Kale feels like a burden and bursts into tears; her anger at Goku, who she thinks is stealing Caulifla from her, erupts into her giant form. She tramples the Saiyan, and not even a Super Saiyan Blue Kamehameha leaves a mark. Piccolo realizes she cannot control her power: Kale starts firing blasts in every direction, knocking out Methiop and even the Pride Trooper Vewon, who had tried to tie her up with his whip.

Even Top is impressed, but it is Jiren who acts: a single energy blast engulfs Kale, hurls her into the air and explodes. She reverts and passes out, and Caulifla and Hit carry her to safety. Goku steps forward to face Jiren.

Our take

For its hundredth episode the series goes for pure spectacle, and Kale delivers. The Broly nods are everywhere, from the way she drags Goku across the ground to her unbothered march through his Kamehameha, but the character has her own emotional engine: insecurity and the fear of losing the one person who matters. The mix works.

Caulifla, for her part, confirms she is a natural, and her almost teacher-and-student dynamic with Goku is one of the freshest of the tournament. The ending, with Jiren settling things without breaking a sweat, is a perfect reminder: above all this chaos there is still someone on another level entirely.

Trivia

  • Written by King Ryū and directed by Kazuya Karasawa, with Yoshitaka Yashima as animation director. It drew a 5.7% TV rating in Japan.
  • In the manga, Caulifla never reaches Super Saiyan 2, and Kale uses her Legendary form only once before the fusion.
  • Also in the manga, Murisam and Methiop fall to Android 17, Vewon to Kefla, and Napapa, Nigrissi and Narirama to unseen fighters.
  • In Funimation's dub, Vegeta speculates that Kale's form is "possibly" the Legendary Super Saiyan.

Did you know? In the original, Kale repeats Goku's name eight times during her rampage; Funimation's dub replaced it with eight different insults, each starting with "Goku the".
